As a mom of three school-age children (one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school), I’m concerned about schools cutting back on physical education programs. It’s no secret that childhood obesity is on the rise, but that’s not the only reason it’s important to keep physical education in our schools: fit kids actually do better on math and reading tests than their less-fit peers. So ironically, schools that are dropping gym classes to focus more on academics are actually being counterproductive.
